Pcv valve 68 fastback 390 4b carb

Postby belky68 » Mon Feb 26, 2018 2:42 pm

Hi all,
Can someone please explain the route the pcv hose should go, engine is constantly blowing oily smoke out ou the filler cap,
Mine is pcv valve out of the right side block, fed to the back of the carb, then with a tee with a hose going nowhere,
I’m new to the world of classics so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Quick bit of googling suggests your route is right, but the Tee should feed off to the bottom of the air cleaner:

Also threw this up:

If the pcv valve is bad or the pcv passage is clogged it wont pull enough air through the crankcase to overcome the blowby. If the pcv is working and you still get smoke from the oil filler then you have excessive blowby (rings worn out).

Hope that helps... :?

Thanks for the info, the air cleaner that’s on has a place where a pipe could go but would need to be punched out, if it’s the worst case sanereo worn rings, what kind of price am I facing to have it fixed.

That would be the worst case. Have you checked the stuff like the PCV valve is actually working first?

Re price, god knows. Depends who's doing it I guess. It's your first classic right? Do you have a local go-to guy who can strip it down. I guess its a big job (sucks air through teeth) but not a complicated motor...

Where's Spanner Monkey when you need him?

First off I'd buy a new PCV valve and renew the hoses.
If the tee is an unrestricted tee piece then don't feed it up to the air cleaner as you will give yourself essentially a massive air leak.

If the engine still smokes (presuming the oil is good) then you could fit a remote oil catch-can for the engine to breath into. I'd suggest a 16mm (5/8") bore hose from each valve cover to the can, and run a filter on top of it. The additional volume of hose should allow the engine to breath free-er and cut down crank-case pressure.

If it still blows smoke then I'd suspect bad rings/bores and/or fubar'd valves and guides. You'd be best to phone a good engine builder for rebuild costs as us keyboard warriors will give you estimates from 50p to $1,000,000 'cos we all know a mate who "built my engine for a box of special brew...." :D
