Project Bang4Buck – budget build S197 daily/track car

Postby badhand » Wed Aug 02, 2017 6:20 am

So while we wait for the main project, 'Hellraiser' to be built, I'm going to run a budget build of another Mustang I can actually drive day to day.

Hellraiser is no holds barred, balls-out dream car. Bang4Buck is a practical, all rounder.

Something built with limited funds that will get me to work every week day, and round circuits every track day. So where better to start than with a bog standard, unmodified, ten year old, blank canvass, S197 GT. Character, decent power, great looks, and reasonably priced. With 34K on the clock she should go for years and take all the abuse I'm gonna give her.

So, in line with the MFUK motto - let's "Mod the shit out of the Mustang!" :rock

First thing that HAS to be done is to lose that ugly 4x4 wheel gap and get her as low as I can. First bang for buck mod: uprated springs from Facebook chums - some Vogtlands for a hundred quid. Thanks Nic, TT and Chris.

No need to blow a fortune on adjustable coilovers. These'll get me round the bends to work...

The next mod: bargain Facebook find - GT500 brake kit. 6 pot Brembos and 15" discs for the front, bigger discs and 'Shelby' callipers for the rear. Not sure I'm gonna bother with the rears, but these babies are definitely going up front. I love big brakes. Of course it means I need bigger wheels, so they're on order, along with a JLT brake cooling kit and some other bits and pieces to get Bang4Buck a bit more track ready...

The recent brace of Hurricanes has delayed the ship with my stuff in it, so not much progress on the build. But at least something made it through the storms; Tyre stickers to tart up the P-Zeros. Might leave the 'P' off. Seems apt for the tyre...

Yes Yes Yes! Just took the Banger out for a breakfast run to Goodwood with cati and then on to some Fareham meet. Gave me time to evaluate the old bugger post mods. Tyres not scrubbed in, road cold and wet, so jury still out on handling, stopping etc, but already, I reckon it looks better, handles better, feels better and stops better than last week. That's a 'full of awesome' verdict basically.

What went on:

19" RTR Tech Sevens 9.5" and 10.5"
Falken Azensis 265/35 and 295/30
GT500 big brake kit with Brembo 6 pots up front
Vogland sport springs all round
RTR Tactical Performance Adjustable Panhard Bar
Part of the JLT Brake cooling kit
CDC Aggressive Chin Spoiler

Wheels look great, as does the car now... needs more gloss black, roof and wing mirrors ;)

Oh here's another picture. I chuffin' love this car. I even love the colour now.

Image

I do regret my tyre choice though. I went 30 profile on the rear cos there were no 40 x 295s at Camskill. They look a bit weedy and there's hideous wheel gap even though the springs are shorter.

I'm also pissed off with the CDC chin spoiler, which I was hoping to not have to paint. But it looks ball sack with all kinds of discolouring. Almost like someone has sanded it:

Image

I quickly tried some bumper/trim stuff on it, but what I've got isn't good enough. I think I'll complain and see where that gets me, but in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas apart from Back to Black or boot polish before i get the Plasti Dip out. I want to keep it semi-gloss black rather than Windy blue or gloss.

Rattle can Matt black — don’t use back to black or your fooked... can’t spray over it as it is silicon based

How about brushed stainless steel wrap. I’ve got a small iron that use for covering balsa planes that would do the job.

Those mirrors are cack and the caps like lipstick on a pig, remind me of wonder bras
