exporting a new car illegal?

Postby essex_biker » Wed Jan 29, 2014 7:14 pm

Im looking at getting another mustang soon and have some friends over in texas. They went and asked some questions at some of the local ford dealers there and were told they cant sell a new car if it is going to be exported. Also that customs wont let a car out of the US untill it is 6 months or older?.. Anyone else heard of this? You can get some amazing deals on new stangs at the moment from $19,000 for a new v6 premium which is about £11,500 ! plus taxes and shipping and the sva. Which is still alot cheaper than buying second hand in this country.

Apparently theres a big scam going on in the US where a broker will get someone to buy a new car for them and then hand over the title for a commision fee. Then they export the car to somewhere like china for a 300% markup. US customs are now wise to this and have impounded hundreds of vehicles...

Local dealers will be lazy arses. I've spoken to quite a few in Florida and California and they more often than not don't know and can't be arsed to know about exporting cars.

Its not illegal. Just too much hassle for the margins on a V6 probably...

I suspect that as with anything there are ways... again I'd have thought that Ron Fenton and Doubler Kid would have some good info on this

Tropical Ford in Orlando have exported heaps of cars to the UK. No problems, they will even arrange the pick up for shipping.

The other pain for them is they don't want to sell a car they want to sell the finance. Most UK car purchases from US dealers are a cash deal for them so they make the markup on the car but don't get the kickback for selling a finance deal, GAP insurance etc.
